| The analysis of the Argentine fishing fleet (SW Atlantic) evolution as of 1960 allows to explain the major causes of expansion, the crisis in the fisheries and the structural changes of the fleet during the 90's. Different fleet classification criteria focused on fishing capacity, fish landing composition, yields and productivity indices are described. The expansion cycles were associated to the incorporation of fishing vessels, while the 1960-1989 crisis originated in domestic and international economic crisis and changes in the strategy pattern of the fishing countries.
